Don’t forget the What The Heck Fest going on today through Sunday. This is an annual festival that piggybacks on Shipwreck Day, this will be it’s 7th year running. The WTHF is a bunch of outstanding talents that play music, show films, exhibit art, and other forms of expression at various venue’s throughout Anacortes. Always a good time, check it out!

Thanks for the shout out to WTHF and thanks for having an interesting blog.
I think it’s interesting that your blog centers around real estate issues, mostly advocating deregulation. As someone involved in local music and art subculture, I have realized that one of the factors keeping Anacortes so unique, and capable of producing so much incredible culture that is recognized worldwide, is that homogenizing forces such as formula businesses and big box stores have not been allowed to take over as much as they have in other similarly sized towns. If there had been a big box retail store like a Walmart or Fred Meyer on the island ten years ago, the cultural conditions that gave rise to the phenomenon of What The Heck Fest certainly would not have existed.

Kevin, yes the blog revolves mostly around real estate as that is the business I’m in, however I don’t advocate deregulation. I am all for some governmental controls; just no taking of property rights. I’m also a believer in the free market system, which may mean we have a box store at some point – however we can put in regulations that dictate size, appearance, etc, and those are regulations I am all for. I don’t want us to lose the small town feel, but I also don’t believe we should penalize land owners who have banked on investments made years ago. I also disagree that WTHF’s existance has anything to do with box stores or the lack thereof. Anacortes is a wonderful place with some amazing talents and minds; Fred Meyers on Hwy 20 won’t change that. Thanks for sharing your views!
